Here and There

My wife got me involved with quilting. She’d have me sketch out ideas she had in the size she intended for the quilt. This helped her with fabric choices as well as cutting and placing. After a few of these I wanted to know the whole process and this started me on the quilting path. I’m now comfortable enough to operate a sewing machine without supervision.

As I’ve learned more about quilting, I’ve come across many interesting blocks, patterns and colors. I ‘ve furtively experimented with painting on fabric to create tapestries. This piece is the first going the other way using quilt patterns to cut, color and reassemble a map before painting. Though the colors in this piece are a little muted it’s allowed me to use more bold, vivid colors as well as more of map.

The Titmouse is painted on a map fragments of Western New York. I’ve lived in Western New York for 22 years and have rarely used New York maps, but plan on more. This piece was awarded Third Place at the GoArt! 4th Annual Art of the Rural (April 2020) show in Batavia, NY.
